The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) Global Markets Programme is an initiative launched by the GFSI which offers small and less-developed organizations a step-by-step approach to implementing food safety requirements building to GFSI-recognized food safety standard or scheme certification.
Through this approach, capacity building in food safety is achieved, while access to local markets is facilitated and a system for mutual acceptance along the supply chain is created.
The programme consists of 3 phases, and a tool kit and clear guidelines have been developed by the GFSI to help organizations better understand the programme.
This tool kit is available for download at www.mygfsi.com.
The three phases of the GFSI Global Markets programme:
- Phase 1: A series of food safety requirements known as the GFSI Basic Level Requirements should be implemented by the food organization within a period of twelve months.
- Phase 2: The food organization should progress to the next tier where a second series of food safety requirements, the GFSI Intermediate Level Requirements should be implemented within a twelve month period.
- Phase 3: After this two year period, the food organization should be in a position to progress to full certification against a GFSI-recognized food safety scheme.
What are the benefits of the GFSI Global Markets Programme?
By better managing their activities, food organizations can demonstrate that they operate in a safe and responsible way, mitigating their risks and progressing along a path towards better market access, consumer acceptance, continual improvement and reduced costs.
