Developed in 1997 by Social Accountability International (SAI), the SA8000 standard is a credible, comprehensive and effective management system based tool for helping to improve workplace conditions.   When independently assessed and certified, SA8000 helps a company to publicly demonstrate their conformance to accepted principles for Social Accountability.

SA8000 is based on human rights conventions from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) , the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Convention of Rights of the Child. It includes elements to help:

  • Prevent child labor, forced labor, discrimination, and inhumane discipline

  • Protect freedom of association and rights to bargain, worker compensation, and working hours
