Food safety in the manufacture of food and feed for animals
The PAS 222 - Prerequisite programmes for food safety in the manufacture of food and feed for animals - aims to ensure confidence in animal food and feed production by collecting good practices for the manufacture and distribution of animal food feed and ingredients from manufacturers around the world.
The PAS 222 specification was developed to help manufacturers with establishing preventative measures to ensure the safety of their products and to assure customers that a comprehensive food safety system is in place.
Sponsored by SSAFE (Safe Supply of Affordable Food Everywhere), the specification was developed with broad stakeholder representation through a steering group including leading organizations such as the Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Foundation for Food Safety Certification (FSSC), Cargill, Land O’Lakes, Nestlé and Nutreco.
Developed in response to growing requests from the animal feed industry, the prerequisite programmes outlined in PAS 222 are of particular interest to organizations involved in the manufacturing and supply of compound animal feed and ingredients utilized in the manufacture of animal feed and pet food, as well as to certification bodies and public authorities.

Next to the plan for extension of the FSSC scope to cover feed, this development is also in line with the commitment for FSSC from the international food manufacturers and the GFSI ambition to extend the current GFSI scopes. This integrated supply chain approach allows FSSC to provide certification for more sectors in the supply chain based on ISO 22000 and technical specifications for sector specific prerequisite programmes. FSSC 22000 is ready to cover additional sectors at the moment the neces¬sary prerequisite programmes for a sec¬tor have been realized and relevant stakeholders in the international food sectors request FSSC 22000 to cover these sectors.
