Developed jointly with the Institute of Packaging (IoP), the BRC Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials establishes a set of requirements for retailers and manufacturers to help ensure safe and suitable manufacturer and supply of both food and non-food product packaging materials. Initially developed for the UK market, the BRC / IoP Packaging standard is now global.
As part of the standard, three categories of packaging with regard to the standards of hygiene under which the packaging is produced are identified, and a decision tree to help identify the product packaging’s category is provided; BRC / IoP certification does not include product inspection.
What are the Benefits of BRC / IoP Packaging Certification?
Certification to the BRC / IoP Packaging Standard helps enable a single assessment protocol as opposed to separately commissioned hygiene audits and/or second party customer audits to support ‘due diligence’ and help improve practice; this helps reduce costs and increases efficiency, and also establishes:
A single comprehensive verification program enabling regular reporting to food retailers and other parties as agreed
A comprehensive scope covering quality, hygiene and product safety
Regular surveillance visits to help ensure continual improvement of the quality, hygiene and product safety system
The newest edition of the BRC Packaging standard was published in January 2008. For additional information, visit the BRC Global Standards website.
