LRQA Leading the Way in Food Quality LRQA, an international registrar within the food industry for many years, issued the first ISO 22000 approval in North America to Kraft Foods in April 2006. For the first time in history, a certifiable standard providing an internationally harmonized framework for the safety and quality requirement exists for the whole food chain.
In September 2005, the International Organization for Standardization announced the publication of ISO 22000, which provides certification for all types of organizations within the food chain ranging from feed producers, primary producers, food manufactures, transport and storage operators and subcontractors to retail and food service outlets.

What is ISO 22000? ISO 22000 is an international industry standard formulated and recognized as a full food management system that is applicable for all organizations across the food supply chain. ISO 22000 embodies and maintains the Codex Alimentarius HAACP principles, requires the implementation of good practices and expects organizations to define the practices that are appropriate to them.
ISO 22000 can be implemented on its own; however, it is designed to be fully compatible with ISO 9001 and as such, the standard requires a company to manage control measures in accordance with the quality management standard ISO 9001. In addition, the format of ISO 22000 is the same as ISO 9001 and 14001, making it suitable to develop integrated risk management systems.
The ISO 22000 standard has three parts:
- requirements for good manufacturing
- requirements for HACCP according to HACCP principles of the Codex Alimentarius
- requirements for a management system
While the requirements for good manufacturing practices are not listed in the standard, the standard does make references to existing practices.
For further detail, copies of the ISO 22000 standard can be obtained from www.ISO.org.
