Many organizations rely on their information technology as part of their core business services and changes within those IT systems affect hardware, software, communications and support. This is the realm of IT service management and the scope of ISO/IEC 20000.
LRQA was one of the first registered certification bodies to be recognized by itSMF to provide accredited assessment to ISO/IEC 20000.
What is ISO/IEC 20000?
The ISO/IEC 20000 standard defines the requirements for an IT service management system. This system can be used by the IT department of a company or by an outsourced provider of IT services to ensure an approved level of service to their internal or external customers.
ISO/IEC 20000 is applicable to all sizes of organizations providing IT service management activities who wish to benchmark their existing IT service management. ISO/IEC 20000 is a British standard developed by the IT Service Management Forum (itSMF) and is gaining worldwide acceptance.
This standard promotes the adoption of an integrated process approach to effectively deliver managed services to meet the business and customer requirements. For an organization to function effectively it has to identify and manage numerous linked activities. Coordinated integration and implementation of the service management processes provides the ongoing control, greater efficiency and opportunities for continual improvement.
The standard may be used:
by businesses that are going out to tender for their services
to provide a consistent approach by all service providers in a supply chain
to benchmark IT service management
as the basis for an independent assessment
to demonstrate the ability to meet customer requirements
to improve services

What the Benefits of ISO/IEC 20000 Certification?
Certification to ISO/IEC 20000 helps create a systematic framework in which organizations drive continual improvement. ISO/IEC 20000 is management system based. The basis of the standard is the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle common with other management system standards enabling you to operate an integrated system thereby reducing duplication and costs.
It enables you to demonstrate best practice, and the standard can be applied pragmatically by organizations, whatever their particular circumstances. ISO/IEC 20000 is based on the work done by the UK Office of Government Commerce (OGC) and the internationally accepted IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) to give the user confidence that real benefits will be brought to the way your IT services are managed.
