BRC Global Standard for Food Safety: Food Safety

Managing Food Safety

The BRC Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials establishes a set of requirements for retailers and manufacturers to help ensure safe and suitable manufacturer and supply of both food and non-food product packaging materials...

Under the auspices of the British Retail Consortium (BRC), many of the UK’s major retailers joined forces and combined the basic principles of their own individual food safety schemes to this technical standard, first issued in 1998.  Now, the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety is identified by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and accepted by major international retail brands as a global standard to help protect consumers and prevent food safety incidents through adherence of its established set of food safety requirements.

The standard contains requirements for a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) system in accordance with the requirements of Codex Alimentarius, a documented quality management system and control of the manufacturing factory standards, products, processes and personnel.

What are the Benefits of BRC Food Safety Certification?

In addition to demonstrating your organization’s food safety practices meet a globally recognized food safety standard, certification to the BRC Food Safety standard may help fulfill an obligation of the retailers who carry your products.

Additional benefits include:

  • Certification to a standard recognized by the GFSI and some of the world’s top food retailers

  • Enabling your business to report of your status of certification to your customers who recognize and/or require certification to this standard

  • Assurance of all aspects of your food safety processes

  • Addressing due diligence requirements of both the supplier and the retailer

  • Fosters continual improvement

  • Can be combined with additional certification such as ISO 9001 and HACCP

The BRC Global Food Safety Standard, in its fifth issue, was most recently updated in January 2008.  For additional information, visit the BRC Global Standards website.
